She escapes a similar fate due to a run-in with a mysterious agent for the Hellsing Foundation: the gunslinger master vampire Arucard. Vampires wipe out her entire squad, turning them all to ghouls. I intend to read it as soon as I can get my hands on it, and intend to make Blood: the Last Vampire part of my regular Halloween anime-viewing! ( Jiffy Burke)ĭuring an infiltration and containment mission, police officer Seras Victoria is exposed to a world she never knew existed. Since viewing the film, I've learned that there is a manga that further expands on the mythos set forth in the movie. Although the film is quite short (48 minutes), it introduces a whole fresh dimension to vampires and vampire-slayers. Curiously, Saya appears to feel both sorry for and angry at the chiropterans she has slain.īlood: the Last Vampire drips with the stuff, literally, and does so with style. She seems to get by just fine with whatever edged weapon falls into her capable hands, despite dull or broken steel. And though she seems obsessed with it, we never really learn why Saya seems to be looking for a certain antique sword. Small details are gradually revealed about the strange, almost alien chiropterans. The action scenes form the truly impressive heart of Blood: the Last Vampire. Saya herself is timeless, possibly immortal, as we learn when a photo, dated 1892, is revealed showing her as the young daughter in a wealthy family. Truly, this could take place in any decade and any country. The setting for Blood: the Last Vampire is meant to be Japan, 1966, but such details are not material to the story in any significant way. Now three chiropterans have revealed their true forms and Saya must slay them all before they escape. She springs into action and manages to scare the daylights out of the poor nurse, who ends up being rescued from the chiropterans several times as the violence escalates. Using supernatural senses, Saya learns that more chiropterans are nearby, and that two students are about toĪttack the school nurse. The students are excited about the upcoming spooky festivities the perfect backdrop for unusual behavior. Ironically, just before Halloween, Saya is enrolled in a school near a US military base at Yokota Japan, apparently to investigate a suspicious suicide. Could she be a clone or a true vampire? Or is Saya a vampire-slayer or a sort of dark samurai? Violently after he offends Saya by swearing, "Jesus!" He reminds his young partner that they must not anger her, as she is the last "original." This is our first clue that young Saya may be more than she appears to the casual observer. They obviously respect Saya's abilities and defer to her, perhaps even fear her. After she viciously slays the only other passenger, revealed to be a chiropteran (possibly a sort of demon), she is met by two men who appear to be part of a secretive government agency. Gorgeous 3D CGI blends perfectly with traditional techniques and are enhanced by digital motion and blurring effects.Ī dour-looking young woman, Saya, is riding on a subway late at night. Beautiful animation supports a story that doesn't reveal itself very quickly or obviously to the viewer. The high-quality animation techniques one finds in both Akira and FLCL are found throughout Blood as well. Hiroyuki Kitakubo, director of Blood: the Last Vampire, served as an animator on the classic Akira and, more recently, on the bizarre and enjoyable FLCL ( Fooly Cooly). See this previous article for more infomation. Also, D ( VHD and VHD:B) is a dhampir not an dunpeal, dampeal, or dampiel as he is called in the anime.
